Tools - Benefits for you
Build Your Resumé
Getting involved with Spread the Net is a great way to build your leadership skills and contribute to valuable community-based volunteering. Here are a few skills that you can pick up with Spread the Net:
- Presentation skills – If you are introducing Spread the Net to your peers or school community through a speaking engagement, you will strengthen your presentation skills in new settings.
- Leadership skills – Motivating others to get involved in Spread the Net and keeping everyone on top of their responsibilities is a great way to enhance your leadership skills.
- Event planning and project coordination – Why not highlight the strong organizational and project management skills you exhibited in participating in Spread the Net? Consider showcasing important elements such as the development of a creative idea/activity, raising awareness, organizing logistics of the event/initiative, collecting funds, monitoring fundraising results and communicating progress to your school.
- Fundraising – Fundraising skills are a great addition to your resumé and are most effective when qualified with numeric figures such as: “Led major school fundraising event raising more than $5,000 to support UNICEF through the Spread the Net campaign”
- Teamwork – No matter what kind of future employment you are seeking, teamwork skills are one of the most important soft skills you can build. Your participation in a Spread the Net initiative at your school, if involving teamwork, can be a great example to highlight in your next job interview.
Gain Community Service Hours (for high school students)
While requirements vary across the country, many school boards in Canada encourage or require high school students to get invovled in community volunteer activities - known as community service hours. Why not use your experience 'spreading the net' to earn community service hours? If you wish to do so, first confirm that our programme fits your school's criteria and download the community service tracking sheet that can be found on the Tools for Students page.
